When to build your 2027 garden itinerary

This piece is about when to plan rather than when to travel. The two are different problems, and getting the planning calendar right is what lets you take advantage of the travel calendar.

What gets published, and when

Festivals and annual shows are typically announced one to two seasons ahead. A spring bird festival is a good example of the pattern: the Spring Wings Bird Festival in the Lahontan Valley wetlands of northern Nevada was announced roughly a month before it ran, covering two days at the end of April and start of May, with self-guided tours to five separate wetland sites, volunteers stationed at each, a central base in a town park, and a program including a big day birding competition, a scavenger hunt and a photo contest.

One month is short notice for travel. That is why the useful habit is watching the site's notices from about three months out rather than searching once and giving up.

The long-lead fixtures

A few things are announced years ahead and are worth knowing about early. The United States will take part in the 2027 International Horticultural Expo in Yokohama, Japan, its first participation in an international horticultural expo since the series formally began in 1960. The United States Botanic Garden is leading the entry in collaboration with the American Public Gardens Association, the event runs for six months, and named officials have been appointed to lead the exhibit.

Fixtures on that scale exist in most years somewhere. They are the only garden events worth planning more than a year ahead.

For everything else, early planning has diminishing returns. Booking a hotel eleven months out for a garden trip commits you to a date before you know whether the exhibit you wanted has been confirmed, and cancelation terms that far ahead are rarely generous enough to make it worthwhile.

What to leave open

Leave accommodation and the second half of each day open as long as you can. Both are usually available late, and both are the things you will want to change once you know what the trip is actually like. The habit that makes all of this work is checking regularly rather than thoroughly. Ten minutes a month on the notices pages of three or four institutions will catch every announcement that matters, and it spreads the planning across the year instead of concentrating it into one frustrating evening.
